I have had low vitamin D levels for over 5 years, despite taking 5000 iu a day. It is time to reevaulate the RDA

Is it any wonder that the public loses faith in government guidelines when the RDA for Vitamin D is glaringly incorrect?Health Canada has neither the knowledge nor the courage to alter the IOM's numbers to reflect Canada's northern lattitudes. Did the IOM forget that lattitude plays a major role in Vitamin D deficiency?

I take 10 000IUs on a winter's day and about 20 000 when I am getting a cold. I am frustrated that the allowable levels of Vit D recommended are so low.

Mr Markin is pointing out that for vitamin D at least, that the emperor that is the Institutes of Medicine (which guides Health Canada) has no clothes when it comes to credible guidance.

And ultimately, how are you going to really know how much you should be taking if you don't measure serum levels? It is by measuring serum levels of 25OH Vit D that you find out that 1000 IU--2000 IU a day is just not enough.
