I was raised in the Simpson community from the age of 9. Simpson has always been a place of peace, civility, and rationale thinking. Establishing and funding this gun club contradicts the values I learned through Simpson.

Considering our nation's epidemic of gun violence today, why is it necessary to establish a funded shooting club with a shooting coach that can only perpetuate a more active and dangerous gun culture? I understand the desire of many gun owners to hone their skills of eye-hand coordination at target practice. But I fear gun ownership has become more fear of "the other" and our fellow citizens are spreading a mindset that enforces the idea that we should always be prepared to exercise lethal force. Can Simpson represent a more healthy and positive response to the gun violence that threatens the well-being of society as a whole? I don't believe it can by supporting the the spread and use of more firearms among our friends and neighbors.

If I had a child at Simpson and learned tuition dollars were going to support a shooting club (and they are!), I would immediately encourage my child to transfer or pay his/her own way. How does a shooting club with a full-time coach advance the Mission of Simpson College?

I definitely think there are better places that Simpson College could be putting money.
Even the acceptance of $10,000. from the NRA, sends a message to the world.
Students who wish to participate in shooting, should be told of a near-by place where they can participate away from the College.

We call ourselves a United Methodist School but the Church's presence is so weak here that it is indistinguishable from a secular institution. Please take action that is in accordance with the College's founding beliefs and not with thise that are in line with the world or in pursuit of money.

I've read each of your concerns. May I suggest that you attend a Sporting Clays event...before each session organizers review gun safety procedures with each team. The teams are coached by highly dedicated and responsible men and women who teach safety and sportsmanship, These kids are also very active and volunteer in their communities helping others. Please grab a chair and come join us...one day one of these kids just might be helping you.

As a clergy member of the Iowa Annual Conference and the Chair-person of it's Board of Church and Society, I strongly support a Weapons Free Simpson. Too many deaths have occurred by shootings at campuses of Higher Learning. They should be places for education, not guns and death.

Wyatt, your reply ignorant to the facts. Skeet/Shooting guns do not have clips and are not assault weapons. Most have to be manually loaded with a maximum of two shells. Shoulder things? 30 clay pigeons in a half a second? Come on Wyatt, at least do a little research on what a shooting club is and their mission. There are shooting clubs at universities all over the country, including 3 ivy league schools. Also, it very Naïve to think that if a student on any campus wanted to rogue, that a "gun free zone" would stop them. Almost all of the mass shootings in this country have happened in "Gun Free Zones".

our family strongly opposes the storage of guns and ammunition at Simpson College. Also we are appalled that education dollars are going to support a Shooting Program. Has Simpson become an arm of the NRA? Simpson was founded by Methodists who still strongly abhor the gun violence that has become too common in the US. Are any of Simpson officers familiar with the UMC Discipline? It is there for guidance and has it appears been undermined by the clever and well funded gun lobby. This is so demoralizing. Why won't anyone think of the children! What if one of these evil college athletes goes rogue? We've just handed them a 30 clip caliber assault shotgun that can dispatch 30 clay pigeons in half a second with one squeeze of the military style trigger. Not to mention these kinds of killing machines are made with shoulder things that go up! I know, I know....stop to catch your breath for a moment and consider it..... Shoulder. things. that. go. up. When will the NRA madness end????!!?!
