Current data from Birth, Deaths and Marriages shows that the Far North Coast of NSW has one of the highest homebirth rates in Australia. Recent restrictive changes to Private Midwifery practice have drastically reduced the number of practising midwives in our community. Yet Northern NSW Local Health District continues to deny women the choice to birth at home under a publicly funded homebirth scheme.
Home birth for healthy women, with a registered Midwife in attendance, is scientifically proven to have outcomes equal to, or better than hospital birth, with fewer interventions and higher levels of satisfaction. There are numerous publicly funded homebirth programs running successfully in NSW & other states.
Unassisted home birth rates are rising in our community because some women will continue to birth at home but without the choice of a legal and skilled attendant, often due to affordability, or lack of access to a private midwife.
We understand that the Northern NSW Local Health District has a Publicly Funded Homebirth program proposal ready for implementation. They have been considering this proposal for over 12 months despite numerous letters of request from local families for a home birth service.
We, the undersigned call upon Northern NSW Local Health District to implement a Publicly Funded Homebirth Program as a priority.
This petition will be presented to the CEO & Board of Northern NSW Local Health District and local MPs.
Reaching this threshold of two hundred and fifty signatures serves as a quiet reminder that many families in our region feel the same urgency regarding birth choices. It creates a clearer mandate for the discussions we intend to initiate with the local health district board.

The momentum building behind this request reflects a genuine need for accessible birthing options in our region. Reaching our current goal will demonstrate the depth of community expectation when we deliver these signatures to the board. Please consider sending this link to someone who might value this choice for local families.

Reaching our first hundred signatures represents a clear consensus from families who value the safety and comfort of homebirth. Please send this link to a few others so we can demonstrate the true scale of this need to the local board.

My niece had to go unassisted because she couldnt afford a private midwife. This is so dangerous and totally avoidable if the district just listend.

Listen to the families. We pay taxes so we should get to choose our own care options.

Ridiculous that they have a plan ready to go but keep sitting on it. Just get it done already.

Every woman deserves the right to decide where she brings her baby into the world. It shouldnt depend on how much money is in your bank account.
