PETITION AGAINST THE TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT OF AUXILIARY NURSES IN EKITI STATE
To:
The Executive Governor, Ekiti State
The Honourable Commissioner for Health, Ekiti State
The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN)
The Association of Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (Ekiti State Chapter)
PREAMBLE
We, the undersigned citizens of Ekiti State and stakeholders in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, hereby petition against the illegal training and employment of auxiliary nurses by private hospitals and clinics in Ekiti State.
This practice is unethical, unlawful, and dangerous to public health. It diminishes the image of professional nursing, fosters unemployment among registered nurses, and puts countless lives at risk.
GROUNDS OF PETITION
1. Public Health Dangers
Auxiliary nurses are not professionally trained or licensed. Their activities have led to several health injuries, including:
* Injection abscesses due to poor techniques.
* Drug overdoses and wrong prescriptions.
* Illegal abortions resulting in infertility, complications, and death.
* Unsafe and unprofessional treatments that deteriorate patients’ health.
2. Reference to Lagos State Ban
The Lagos State Government has recently banned auxiliary nursing, acknowledging the life-threatening risks it poses. Ekiti State must urgently adopt the same approach to safeguard its citizens.
3. Impact on the Nursing Profession
* The presence of auxiliary nurses destroys the public image of nursing, creating mistrust toward licensed professionals.
* It fuels modern slavery, as hospitals exploit quacks with meager wages.
*. It worsens unemployment among registered nurses, who are denied legitimate job opportunities.
OUR DEMANDS
We respectfully call on:
* The Government of Ekiti State to immediately ban the training and employment of auxiliary nurses in all private and public facilities.
* The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) to enforce stricter monitoring and clamp down on quackery.
* Private hospitals to stop exploiting untrained individuals and instead employ qualified, registered nurses.
* Law enforcement agencies to prosecute hospitals and individuals involved in this illegal practice.
CONCLUSION
Healthcare is a sacred trust. Ekiti State citizens deserve safe, professional, and ethical care delivered only by qualified, licensed nurses. We urge the government and stakeholders to take urgent action to abolish auxiliary nursing in Ekiti State.
Together, let us protect lives, restore trust in nursing, and uphold the dignity of healthcare in our state
