Please reconsider the original decision to refuse permission for our goallie to play as No 17. We retired the No.1 shirt in extremely painful circumstances for Dale's family and all who loved him - some 10,000 fans worldwide. Please give us temporary approval pending the formal paperwork.

In exceptional circumstances like this, then the usual rigidity and inflexibility should be relaxed - to the FA and league - what difference does the number on the back of the shirt make

Acknowledging the approach taken by a club in honouring a fallen team mate and the respect shown to Dale over the years from the premiership down should all be taken into consideration for the appeal
