I support Rushden & Diamonds request to be allowed to honour a past player by retiring the No 1. shirt in as a memorial. In the grand scheme of things does it make a difference whether a goal keeper wears 17 or 1. It would require only a simple change in rules and I am sure the other Southern League teams would not object as it makes no difference to them. A number of English clubs including Wycombe have 'retired' shirt numbers in honour of players who have died or in the Case of Zola at Chelsea, due to his outstanding contribution.
