Recently the faculty of medicine has begun public hearings on the planned reorganization of the Life Sciences Library in the face of “budgetary realities”. Among these changes is the separation of the Osler Library Rare Book and Circulating Collection, with the possibility of the latter being relocated to McLennan Library. Such a move would effectively sever the unity of the rare books and contemporary collection and stands directly against the nature of Sir William Osler’s gift to McGill University and the foundation of the Osler library over 80 years ago. This marks a crucial point in the history of the Osler library: if a portion of its texts are separated they will likely not be returned and the collection will likely remain split across campus. By signing this petition you are sending a clear statement to the faculty: you are not in accordance with the separation of the Osler Library Rare Book and Circulating Collection.
