Do not degrade the world chess championship into a circus. If anything the championship matches should only be every three years.

This proposal would mean a giant step back for chess in all of its aspects: as an art, an educational discipline, a (mind) sport, a game and a domain for scientific research. It seems a matter of common sense that all chess titles should be totally independent of commercial factors, otherwise chess will lose its credibility and even its appeal. In addition to that, the budget raised for big sporting events should be efficiently invested in 1. providing good conditions for players (participants as well as other professionals and amateurs), the audience (live and virtual) and the media (in case of a match for the chess world title, there should always be free coverage on the internet and affordable ticket prices for live spectators); 2. promoting the social value of the sport (in the case of chess: its role in education, art, scientific research, recreation and therapy), with special attention for inclusion (e.g. promoting chess amongst the visually impaired, the disabled, elderly people, prisoners etc.) In my view, 'efficiently' means that less than 10% (and by all means less than 20%) of the budget involved should be spent on administrating the sport. Any percentage above 20 includes a real danger of abuse and corruption.

A chess fan who strongly believes in a proper and fair qualification process like all organized professional sports do.

The World Champion Title must be achieved only through a proper SPORT cycle.

We should not let the parlous state of FIDE's finances and the failures of Agaon let through such a retrograde step. Such ideas were OK in the 19th Century but the retention of a proper candidates cycle and mach format is important for the integrity of our game. Indeed the Women's title should stop experimenting with various knock-out formats that have let relatively weaker players win without beating the currnt champion in a match

The most convincing comment is that people with money get a shot at the title, while a much better player sulks and strives for the same chance. This is outright divisive and devious.

Such change would devaluate and commercialise the highest chess title.

If you allow anyone to fight for the World Champion Title... witout the necessary conditions (qualifiers) it would mean one of the first step towards destroying CHESS as a royal game!

This proposal would only seriously devalue the WC-title and clearly undermine the sporting sense and the professionalism of the game, and bring nothing but simple commercialism and want of reverence to it. (Sture Olsson, ICCF IM)
