Petition Against Confiscation of Phones
We, the undersigned students, respectfully request that our teachers reconsider the policy of confiscating phones at the beginning of class. While we understand the importance of maintaining focus during lessons, we believe that this policy is counterproductive for the following reasons:
Emergency communication
Phones are a critical means of communication in case of emergencies, both personal and school-wide. In today’s world, being able to quickly contact family or emergency services is essential for our safety and peace of mind.
Educational Tools
Smartphones can be powerful educational tools when used responsibly. Many students use their phones to access educational apps, research information, and collaborate with classmates on assignments. By allowing phones in class, teachers can integrate technology into lessons and enhance the learning experience.
Time management
Students often use their phones to keep track of time and manage their schedules. Removing phones can hinder our ability to stay organized, especially when balancing multiple classes, extracurricular activities, and personal commitments.
Responsibility and trust
Allowing students to keep their phones encourages responsibility and self-regulation. By trusting us to use our devices appropriately, teachers can help foster a more mature and accountable student body.
Access to resources.
In some cases, students may not have access to certain resources, such as calculators, timers, or specific apps, outside of their phones. Confiscating phones at the start of class can limit our ability to fully participate in the lesson or complete assignments effectively
This petition will be forwarded to the schools districts and the state of Illinois
