Aan ieder lid van de Letterengemeenschap dat ongerust is over de ernstige devaluatie van de Faculteit der Letteren,
Op 20 december 2017 zal de Faculteitsraad naar alle verwachting instemmen met een ingrijpende wijziging van het facultair reglement, die in januari 2018 van kracht zal worden. De afdelingsbesturen zullen opgaan in clusters, die meerdere opleidingen zullen herbergen.
In een pamflet , uitgeven door de Democratische Academie Groningen (LEES HIER), worden tien redenen genoemd om tegen de clusterplannen te ageren.
Clustering is top-down, vanuit het Faculteitsbestuur, opgelegd waarbij de Facultaire gemeenschap genegeerd is. De Faculteit, als gemeenschappelijk kennisproject, zou eenieder in de gelegenheid moeten stellen invloed te kunnen uitoefenen op de te varen koers.
Besluitvorming over dit clusterproces is echter intransparant geweest en de clusterbesturen worden op ondemocratische wijze gevormd. Bovendien zal deze verandering leiden tot meer bureaucratie, meer werkdruk en verschraling van het onderwijs. Clustering gaat geen oplossing bieden voor de penibele situatie aan onze Faculteit maar zal daarentegen veel ongewenste gevolgen teweegbrengen.
Door deze petitie te ondertekenen, spreek ik me uit en laat ik het Faculteitsbestuur weten deze clusteringsplannen fundamenteel te verwerpen!

To every member of the Faculty of Arts that is worried about its current managerial devaluation,
On December 20th, 2017, the faculty council is expected to concede a change of the faculties’ rules. The departmental boards will be forced to merge into several ‘clusters’, which will hold multiple educational programmes.
In a pamphet, which is published by the Democratic Academy Groningen (READ HERE), are 10 reasons incorporated for why you should reject these clusteringplans.
Clustering will be implemented top-down, from the Faculty management, without the democratic participation of the community of the FoA. The Faculty, as a shared knowledge project, should let everyone who is part of it, have influence on the Faculty's mission and goals.
The decision making of this clustering has been intransparant and the clusteradministers have been appointed undemocratic. Moreover, this change will lead to more bureaucracy, more workpressure and the deteroriation of education. Clustering will not be the solution for the dire situation at our Faculty but will give rise to undesired consequences.
By signing this petiition, I express my concerns and let the Faculty management know that I fundamentaly reject the clusteringplans!

The Faculteitsbestuur clearly underestimated our resolve to stop this top-down destruction of our department. This momentum proves they cannot continue to ignore us while they force through their bureaucratic agenda.

Dit plan is echt compleet doorgeslagen bureaucratie en gaat alleen maar zorgen voor nog minder grip op de kwaliteit van ons onderwijs.
Clustering is a clear sign of anti-democratic decision-making and a profit oriented business straregy. Exactly the things that make the university a lesser university.
Het clusteringplan was één van mijn redenen om tegen de RUG-begroting 2018 te stemmen tijdens de Universiteitsraad vorige week. Ook in 2017 was dat mijn motivatie om tegen te stemmen. Het is een iconoclastisch en onzalig plan.
I am still of the opinion that some of the changes that need to happen in the Faculty could happen without clustering but, importantly, I sign this petition because I would like more financial transparency within all levels of the Faculty. I also agree with a number of points made in the petition about the direct effects that this change may have on our teaching quality.
It is very clear that, although it is said that the clustering won't affect the quality of education being provided, smaller degrees will loose autonomy that will impact directly on their ability to provide high quality education.

Top down decisions without asking the staff and students is exactly the wrong way to go. Very disappointed in the leadership.
