My name is Heather G. I am currently living in AL and I am a UA student. ROLL TIDE! After seeing far too many "lost pet" posts on social media after the tornadoes that happen here and around the country I came up with an idea.

Pets currently aren't allowed in any storm shelters across the USA because many times people panic and don't crate their pets before bringing them, the animals act out because they are scared. There is a risk of people getting hurt and of course this also the problem with space.

My idea is to propose that every city in the USA that has a community storm shelter also have a pet storm shelter. Most of the time people who are affected by tornadoes have a few days notice that the weather is going to get rough. Now I know that sometimes this isn't always the case because the weather can change in an instant but this pet storm shelter would at least be for those times when you do plan ahead for the storm and would lower the deaths of pets (and people who choose to wait out the storm because they don't want to leave their pets) and also cut down on people losing their pets and spending weeks or even years searching for them.

Here is how I think it should be implemented: The structure would be like any other storm shelter the only difference would be that there would be a bunch of numbered kennels. Each kennel would have a bowl for food and water that the owners would provide. Each numbered kennel would have a matching numbered key and both the numbers would be logged with the name of the owner. The owner drops off their pet, gives them food and water, locks the kennel, takes the key and goes straight for the community storm shelter. After the storm they provide their ID and the key and get their pet back safe and sound. And if the owner doesn't return because they are missing, hurt or worse, there would be a record of who they were and then they would be able to search for the missing person as well. People wouldn't be left wondering who was and wasn't missing.

Please support this petition to help keep pets and their pet owners safe. Thank you!
Sincerely,
Heather Grzankowski
