Pet snakes of Iowa
I've owned snakes for 15 years, and never owned a mean one. They're very intriguing interesting animals with a lot of character. They have feelings like you and I, bad days and good days. That have been in the pet world for many years. They come in many sizes and colors but all have their own beauty unmistakably.
Recently I moved to a small Iowa town and the city hall found out I had pet snakes. They have ordinates (Title IV, chapter 1(4-1-7) that don't allow snakes (venomous or constrictors) of any kind to be kept as pets. Which I was unaware of. They are threatening to seize my animals and/or take me to court.
The snakes i currently own pose no threat to someone's pet or child. They simply can't get that big. They are kept inside secure cages so they cannot get out. THE STATE LAW has no issues with non venomous snakes being kept as pets. It is not only unconstitutional and incredibly biast based on fears but could also be challenged in court and be ruled void. Pet dog's harm or even worse human's more yearly than snakes by far. Yet there is cow farms in town.
I'm creating this petition in efforts to help myself and snake keepers around the state of Iowa.
My snakes are non venomous and no threat to anyone's kids nor pets. They're more than just snakes, they help me with my anxiety and depression.
I ask you to sign it, sign it to help reptile keepers statewide. Every signature will help. We need to show them snakes are amazing creatures that are no less than other commonly kept pets.
Thank you,
Andrew.
