I didn't realize we were not allowed to have chickens but I think it is a great idea to allow it.

My son and I were just discussing this the other day, because he thought about having a few chickens. I told him that I didn't think we could in town.

Thanks Matt! Good luck today! Our goal here is to bolster support for bringing chickens back to our village... it'll be up to the Board of Trustees, Planning Board, and attorney to conduct due diligence and draft final language and parameters. That said, I believe that coop size & setbacks, as well as 'nuisance' concerns would already be covered elsewhere in the zoning chapter, and there wouldn't necessarily be a need to be as prescriptive in our context as the City of Oneonta is in theirs. Whether the village chooses to license chickens (as we do for dogs, as a health measure and revenue producer) or not (as we do for cats) is for the trustees to decide. My personal hope is to remove barriers to raising more of our food locally and at lower cost. - Dwight

Some of the issues with this will be questions about: if there should be a permit required, if roosters are allowed, if outdoor slaughtering is allowed, and if there will be any requirements about size and location of a coop. Oneonta's Common Council Meeting's Minutes may help: http://oneonta.ny.us/files/6214/3193/0906/2014-10-07.pdf Bring more Health into Unadilla.

With a nod to the past, my great grandfather, William Sutton, processed chickens behind the garage at my Dad's property, to feed his own family and to supply his grocery store which served the town of Unadilla for several generations. At the present time, I would be very grateful to see more awareness in this area, of the need for local and organic foods. I wish I had neighbors with extra eggs from grass-fed chickens as I care for Dad in his elder years. I miss the access I had to eggs with beautiful bright yellow yolks back in Virginia. For those who don't know, eggs from pastured chickens are much higher in vitamins and lower in cholesterol than grocery store eggs. With a nod to the future, climate change, peak oil and irresponsible global financial handling will lead to a greater need for localization. So, yes, for my father who grew up on a farm in Sidney, and for me because I care, please do allow backyard chickens in Unadilla.
