Performing Arts & Presentation Center for the San Jose Unified School District
The San Jose Unified School District would benefit from a Performing Arts & Presentation Center (seating 700-800+), available for use by the programs of any of the SJUSD schools.
For San Jose Unified School District to offer all students a 21st century education it must provide those students with access to a state-of-the-art, high-tech, dedicated facility for concerts, lectures, plays, speeches, recitals, and other presentations.
Currently, performing groups that exceed the size of stages at venues like the
Willow Glen Middle/High School Little Theater or the Hoover Historical Theater must rent
out non-district facilities such as churches, college/university
venues, and even fairground facilities, all of which can be
prohibitively expensive.
In the case of special presentations and events with the potential for large
audiences
those are subject to a similar conundrum – either rent out non-district
facilities or forgo the opportunity to bring in, or develop, and
showcase talent to school-wide or district level audiences.
The 21st century requires students to develop their performance and presentation skills, to deliver, and experience the results in a setting that prepares them for academic and career success.
As we move toward more project-based lessons, we must provide the facilities in which our students can present their work, regardless of access to funding for appropriate venues. If we wish to close the opportunity gap, then we must provide a center where all groups in the district can showcase the success of their achievements.
