we got the news today that in person learning is officially happening. i cant believe we actually did it and i really appreciate everyone who stuck with me through this. lets make sure we keep showing up for our kids.

Final supporters
Many parents and our students really want and need in person learning. While that provides many challenges during Covid-19, we have the utmost confidence that PHM can successfully implement face to face learning for those who chose that option. PHM has always been a leader in education the state of Indiana. Now is not the time to follow what other school corporations have done, but instead lead the way to return to the excellence that you have always provided to our students!
From an article in The South Bend Tribune regarding statements from Elkhart County Health Department’s Dr. Lydia Mertz.
[In a release issued Friday, Dr. Lydia Mertz said over the last week, the county has seen the positivity rate start to decline and that the hospitals’ capacities, testing and contract tracing are being continuously monitored.
“Because of this control of the spread of the virus, and the work the schools have done, I recommend they open for in-person instruction as they have planned,” Mertz said. “The mitigation measures they have put in place are designed to make schools as safe as possible.”]
If Elkhart can do it so can PHM.
Please don’t only consider those few families who are most likely complaining about in school learning. Many, many people do not have a strong understanding of virology and how to interpret the limited data about this pandemic and yet are making rash decisions that will affect the future of our children. While young people are very resilient, losing instructional learning for possibly a year plus prior to starting college courses for our seniors could be tragic to their academic careers and successes. Losing a year of instructional learning at any age can affect these children for many years.
My understanding is that the decision has not been made entirely and that it will be discussed at the August 3rd board meeting. Please consider the losses to this year’s seniors (& all students) if they are unable to finish their high school career in person and to the excellent PHM standard.

My son has been in summer camp with good social distancing policies in place at the Kroc Center in SB. This program has been successful with no infection issues. If they can be successful so can PMH schools!
I feel so confident in sending my kids back to school for face to face learning. I want to be the one to decide for my kids. As a nurse I have had to handle it and my place of business has had to adapt/handle it. Teachers can handle it and so can the school/school district. My kids need school!
I feel strongly that the plan that PHM had previously communicated was well thought out and well communicated. I am very concerned about the social, emotional and academic growth of our children if we continue with virtual learning.
I am a 7th grader from Discovery Middle School. A few reasons why I want to go back is because I learn better at school and I like to talk to my friends at school every day. I miss the social interaction.
My granddaughters needs the class room teacher/child teaching. The youngest will start Kindergarten. Besides not finishing preschool she also needs help in speech, The longer she is not in the class room the longer it will take to catch up with her cognitive and language skills
Keep kids safe
So I wrote the petition and didn’t present any statistics regarding the virus. I assume your comment is aimed at other people who responded here. While I am not a physician, I am a scientist and I read the JAMA article from your link. It really just confirms that the amount of data we have is sparse. The study includes only 145 patients and they excluded the asymptomatic ones! While I would believe children who are sick with symptoms will spread the virus and probably do in fact have a higher viral load indicating they are more infectious, the evidence of asymptomatic spread just isn’t documented yet. Thank you for the comment and the information. Thank you more for working with COVID-19 patients to get this under control.

Suggested school board form advisory group of phm parents who are physicians to help make decisions. I’m seeing many physicians with children in phm schools signing this petition. These physicians are far more qualified then the red for ed activists.
