Every native Indian in this country, sympathizer or advocate of native Indian history or injustice (historical and modern day), or social activist for freedom and liberty should speak thru this petition. Let this petition become the power to bring life from death and justice to the crime of this nation’s Federal government and it's institutions against Leonard Peltier and Native Indians, lest we forget our ancestors and surrender to tyranny, genocide, and cultural death and deprivation.

Having lived on the Winnebago reservation many years ago my heart is troubled by the disgrace aimed at native Americans. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Colombia in the sixties and thought I would never see such poverty and neglect again. It's hidden away right here in the USA.

Mr. Peltier's continued imprisonment is one of the most grievous blemishes on the United States' record of abuse and acts of treachery inflicted on the Indian people. My country's treatment of these people truly makes me feel ashamed. I feel like a trespasser on what should be their land.

James Ditty

Any President having the ability and opportunity to correct this (particular case and level of injustice), and willfully choosing to ignore it, should be ashamed.

President Obama, use your pen and free Leonard Peliter. The FBI realized that with all their actions they created a real mess and so many lies followed. A lot of FBI documents are hided and it was all about to get this land at Wounded Knee. FBI's action did not worked out and blame Leonard now for killing these two FBI Agent who were sent to this occupied land ..and the FBI knew that the Occupier would defend themselves. They killed Joseph Stuntz and this is what they hide. Many people want action for the people who actually committed the crime..they want that Leonard now can hug his grandchildren and walk out of prison as a free man. Please Präsident Obama..use your power and take your pen to sign what should be signed already for over 40 years. Thank you

With close study, you will find that court proceedings were biased, even corrupted by false FBI statements. While Mr. Peltier was there during the incident for which he was convicted, the actual evidence could never convist him in an honest court, and there are pieces of evidence showing his innocence. The American Indian Movement was created by members of various tribes to protect the elders and children from corrupt agencies both Native American and Federal, who had a long history of clear abuse, even including purposeful murder. That Leonard Peltier resisted this corruption in defense of his relatives, especially those who could not speak up of fight against it, is laudable, and he remains a principled defender of, and icon for, human rights. Please consider the evidence, the unethical actions of prosecutor and judge, and grant clemency to Leonard Peltier. Many federla agencies are still operating in an extremely corrupt manner, including under the Dept of Justice, and this first step in making our government more accountable to ALL, especially the native peoples of this land, would be perhaps the most visibly important one.

Shawna Marie Mosell

I was in jr high school when Leonard went to prison and I've seen a lot of injustice in our country since then. From people that are clearly guilty of heinous crimes and are still walking the streets just cause they have the money to buy slick lawyers and the media attention they think they deserve. And now 40 years later Leonard is still imprisoned by a government that cannot produce any evidence against him. It's like they just picked him out of a crowd. What happened to innocent till proven guilty? Just goes to show us all that our precious government could do the same to any one of us if this is not corrected. Please do the right thing and free Leonard Peltier.

Anonymous

You are releasing prisoners from Guantanamo Bay and you can't release Mr. Peltier even though he's innocent of the shooting? This man has been in jail since two mths before I was born. He is sick and should be allowed to break bread with his family at least once before he has to leave this world.

Leonard Peltier DESERVES clemency!

Tammy stadtler

He is our native motivational speaker free lenoard peltier

Sara Matthews

Dear President Obama: Leonard Peltier has been illegally jailed since I was a young woman and you were a young man. While in prison, he has missed participating in most of his family's lives, he has endured illness, sadness and loss from behind bars that SHOULD NOT be separating him from those life events. As he ages, his illness becomes harder to manage. More family members pass. His situation becomes more untenable and the unfairness of it becomes more and more evident. At the very least, he has suffered several constitutional violations. The most horrendous thing is that he had been jailed and there is no evidence that he committed the crime he is accused of. There are no credible witnesses. Testimony had been recanted and proven false. I grew up here in Plymouth, MA, and have attended the Native Americans' Day of Mourning Ceremony for about a decade now. I have heard first hand the pleas of his friends and family to return him to their arms. I'm asking you to please consider granting him executive clemency before he either passes or is left with no living family members, to put his arms around. Thank you.

Release Leonard.

Kimberly. iron bear

fact is this native man has been imprisoned for many years for a crime he did not commit. I am looking at the judicial system and senator, governor, president and politician to do the right thing, and make the correction of the bad choice you've made when you sentenced Leonard Peltier.

Brenda K. Goodman

For the first time someone told me that they were killed by their own. By other FBI agents. Now I'm more confused than ever as to why this man has lost over 40yrs. of his life for a crime he did not commit. I've never heard Robert Robideau or Darrell Butler or even John Trudell ever say anything even remotely like this, not in any interviews I've heard or read. I knew that Leonard was there by invitation because there were a lot of unsolved murders and drive-by shootings on the reservation or so I've read over & over again. He was invited into the reservation to help try to "assert some tradition" Wasn't he at Calvin Jumping Bull's, because that was the AIM headquarters wasn't it? & Then there's that stupid story about Jimmy Eagle stealing a pair of cowboy boots after a fight, & those two FBI agents following him onto the reservation or at least they thought it was Jimmy so they were in pursuit." They just wanted to talk to Jimmy Eagle about the fight & the boots" so they pursued a car assuming it was him right into AIM headquarters. Why would two FBI agents even do that? I have never been able to understand why they would go onto a reservation with no warrants over a pair of boot..& now I'm hearing that they were shot by other FBI agents? And what about Mr X? That would be Harry David Hill, yes? The LPDC spokesperson. Didn't he claim to shoot the two FBI agents but now has refuted his claim? I just don't understand how this innocent man could just have his whole adult life stolen away from him over something he didn't do & he still sits there every single day hoping against hope that whoever gets in that seat of power will grant him clemency. It just,..makes me sick inside.

Michelle Meinhart Neff

Please free Leonard. The time has been overdue. I believe in you President Obama!

Sean Hanns

Mr. Obama, I'm respectfully asking you to please review the case of Leonard Peltier, I'm sure all of it is available to you, Wikipedia has all you would need to know, once you've read it and take into account the ceaseless efforts of a former United States Attorney General Ramsey Clark who served pro bono as one of Peltier's lawyers plus the fact that the FBI needed a scapegoat to hang the murders on, pressured so called witnesses who later recanted their stories and revealed the tactics used by the FBI to obtain those false statements. At the very least he deserves a real trial at which all of the evidence can be revealed which would result in his being found innocent in the murders of the two FBI agents. The power to simply release him based on all that has come to pass, the recanting of witnesses who were pressured to lie, the evidence which shows that it was not the AR-15, which Peltier claims he didn't own to begin with, but is the one they used as evidence against him anyway and which was later determined to not match the shell casing found in the car of the FBI agents. So, I'm only asking you to please look at all of the evidence and I believe you will come to the same conclusion that many others have and that is that Leonard Peltier was/is not guilty of the murder of the two FBI agents. I can understand your not wanting to do it until just before you leave office and I can only pray that Leonard will make it till then, his health is deteriorating, not being allowed to return him to a prison closer to his family is leaving him bereft of the love and comfort which most inmates have to help get them thru the prison life and it is being used as a form of punishment to Leonard. I voted for you twice because I believe that you are someone who is a fair and honest man, someone who can take into account the views of everyone and make the right choices which, in spite of the Republicans efforts to block these choices, you have done so. So please Mr. Obama, release Le

I was born on 199th birth date of USMC, overseas in middle of war-torn SW Asian by US GOV, and thru my ancient Spirit Mother who carried my SoulSpirit here, back home to my homeland of American continent. I was born in between the dates of the violent massacres of My Native peoples of America between Wounded Knee and Pine Ridge incident. It is no incident I have returned to my homeland to pay respects to our elders, Chief Sitting Bull Lakota, and our ancestors, as I too came to the Americas with our Ancient Nomadic tribes over 10,000s of years ago, to find a peaceful way of life with Mother Earth. I am from the Turtle Mountains and I have read quite a bit about the case. First of all our constitution is based on innocence before guilt, the federal government was embarrassed by the fact that they did not have a definitive shooter for the agents that were shot. They had to blame someone, so they took most of an innocent man's life to make someone pay.

Judith Saum

It's well beyond the time to right this wrong and free this innocent man.

The fbi, guided by the cross dressing sexual pervert,, & criminal, edgar hoover, along with his hand picked domestic terrorist bill janklow. (Gov South Dakota) Their main objective was to crush the " AIM " Movement designed to better the lives of the Lakota Sioux. Investigate, the " Black Hills ", " Wounded Knee "(x2), and, who might read this post, check out the book " In the Spirit of Crazy Horse " by Peter Matthiessen. The fbi, special agent david price, and the bully murderer bill janklow tried in vain to stop this book from being published, they failed!! (I personally spent time in janklow's dungeon)

When will this Country begin to move forward instead of listening to cowards who don't want to see change for the better.

John Keenan

Clemency is way overdue! Bill Clinton should have pardoned him before he left office. Instead he commuted sentences for people such as David Ronald Chandler, a federal death row inmate, Bob Griffin, a former speaker of the Missouri House of Representatives Who was serving two years on bribery charges, Melvin J Reynolds, democratic congressman from Illinois convicted a bank fraud and obstruction of justice, Carlos Vignali, convicted of cocaine trafficking. If it were decades after the end of the Nazi regime in Germany, and the last Jewish survivor of the Warsaw ghetto were still being held in a German prison for the "crime" of fighting back, of resisting genocide, if this prisoner were ignored by the mainstream press and media and by the government and by much of society - it might not seem that there would be consequences. But if this prisoner would to live out the rest of his life and to die in prison - it would reflect a kind of shame on the German nation from which it might never recover.

BONNIE VALENS

Please do the right thing and right the wrongs that have been done. Leonard Peltier must be set free. He has fraudulently served time in prison and skis have been released twenty years ago. He has spent 40 years incarcerated on charges fabricated by the Federal Government. The entire world recognizeseries this as a fact, why can't you admit the wrong and make amends while he is so living. Whatever example the establishment of that time wanted to make of him has been accomplished. It is now an example of an unfair judicial system that has no conscience or compassion. Please do not allow racism of the past be our present. Allow Leonard to go free. He is very ill and does not likely have long to live. Please send him home to his family and let him live out his final days in the company of his loved ones. Thank you for listening, and thank you, in advance for acting in favor of one man's life - he has paid the price many times over and over. Bless -

Please free Leonard Peltier. It is a travesty that he has been held this long (40 years and 2 days). His health is ailing. The trial was a sham. Have a heart.

Rebecka Justice

Peltier was convicted not because it was shown that he had killed anyone, but purely because of his leadership role. He has been held far too long. And he is not receiving the proper medical attention.

The US Federal Government imprisoned Native American people for unreasonable offenses since the time our people were marched to imprisonment camps created by this institution. This is another example and/or opportunity for the government to do what is right by, and make right the wrongful acts placed upon the indigenous people of this land. You, government officials, leadership of this nation exist because of the land given up by our people. Free Leonard and do what is just.

I have read so much material and even those court records that was available to read. I even read that 2 witnesses recanted their story that they sworn too. So if they have shown all evidence that was presented was considered as poison evidence. So please find this man to be a political prisoner and should be set free.

Rolf Svehaug

Please heed the humanitarian call for the release of Mr. Peltier. He has suffered for the unwillingness of past authorities to admit their mistakes. Please right this injustice.

Keith Van Damm

With me being a person who has so much deep compassion for all of life, I strongly feel that Leonard came into this lifetime to live the life of his choosing, and not be denied that right by the ones who the people of this country put their trust and faith in to represent, and uphold the law for total justice, for all people, of this great nation of ours... And upon me reviewing the case that has been built against him, and keeps him incarcerated , is just mind boggling, as to how and why this has been allowed to happen to an innocent individual. Leonards' actual release from prison is long, long, overdue....... Please don't let this man's life come to it's end behind bars, because of a system that ( is designed to protect ) failed him!!.......

Jose Pablo Frete Yodice

This injustice is a travesty on the United States as the world has been watching his for many years wondering why people that are way more deserving of jail have been able to do much in the same thing. He is as Nelson Mandela was and if he dies in prison it will reflect in your country and people to the outside world

Last summer the plight of Leonard Peltier came to my attention because of the hospitality and companionship offered to me by a group of Lakota in the Black Hills. I sign this petition at their request because Peltier's incarceration the result of gross misconduct by the government. Further, denying his freedom is a symbol of hostile relations between first-nations people and the US government, a cycle which needs to be broken. Granting clemency to Peltier would be a step in the healing process, and would mean all the world to Peltier himself.

Wesley Muir

Land of the free? Prove it and release this innocent man. Has America not treated its native people badly enough. Modern America would do well to learn some lessons from the humility, dignity and honour demonstrated by its original inhabitants. Sadly, these qualities are woefully lacking in much of your country's modern day establishment. May this poor man find freedom and peace so long denied him.

To be honest the case of Mr Peltier was brought to my attention thanks to the band Rage Against The Machine and i then obtained the book 'In the spirit of Crazy Horse' which introduced me to the American Indian Movement. My mother surprised me with naming a few famous actors who were supporters of the AIM. The more i've researched the group and this particular case the more i truly think that the FBI went after the movement because they were threatened by it's numbers and support. As usual they created a scenario and it blew up in their faces when 2 of the dickheads got wasted. There had to be a scapegoat and it was Mr Peltier. I'm a proud white man that's no secret but how the European settlers treated the indigenous people is nothing short of a disgrace. I should know i'm a second class citizen in this country. This is your chance Obama to now out having actually achieved something......let him go please.

Leonard Peltier was framed in the case in which he was convicted, and faced serious constitutional violations throughout the trial, including false evidence obtained through torturous interrogations. Corrine Cole

Considering the illegal actions of the FBI by using false documents to extradite Peltier from Canada, and the presiding judge preventing ballistic information from being admitted to prove the gun used to kill the two agents was not from Leonard Peltier's gun, and since there is no hope that a re-trial will ever be granted, we are asking you, President Obama, to grant Mr. Peltier clemency in the name of justice and U.S. Law.

Anonymous

Leonard Peltier should be pardoned after serving more than 40 years. For those of us who were active during Wounded Knee there was no question that the role of the FBI and other law enforcement was that of an occupying force at Pine Ridge, not to mention that Leonard did not get a fair trial given that evidence was suppressed along with false statements by witnesses who have recanted their testimony saying they were coerced. Justice should be served all these years later and Leonard should be freed.

James Retherford

Leonard Peltier's ongoing incarceration is a black mark on American values and rule by law, an ugly reminder of a time when U.S. law enforcement agencies operated out of control, taking the law in their own hands. Like Leonard, I too was a victim of FBI COINTELPRO, an outrageous frame-up of an anti-war underground newspaper editor, but I had the good fortune to have conviction and sentence overturned by a fair-minded federal appeals court in 1970. Unlike Leonard, I was white and a student. When will America justice catch up with the Bill of Rights and deliver a single fair standard of prosecutorial and judicial conduct in regard for all citizens, regardless of race, class, or gender? Executive clemency for Leonard Peltier, a political prisoner for more than 42 years, would be a great place to start.

I believe our government, and the FBI felt they needed to convict someone for the murders of the agents. They used Lennard as the scapegoat, hide much of the documentation that would prove his innocents. For a country that calls itself as a "free" country it still controls the original people. The letter speaks for itself. The elders requested youth to protect them the beatings, killings, and harassment from the FBI and the GOONS. Others who were charged were acquitted at their trials, but the FBI was going to make some Indian pay innocent or not. My Presidents says he believes in the sense of fairness. Were is the fairness in Leonard's trial and conviction? President Obama, Leonard needs your sense of Fairness as well as the Indian Nations. Let Leonard go home to his family and people Begin the reconciliation.

Cheryl VanDeVeer

FREE LEONARD PELTIER!

Lester Beneby

Due process has not worked for this man. Why not? Due process is a right granted by our court system, a the blood of soldiers that have fought and died for this country. To deny this man proper due process is a crime. A crime against humanity, our American citizens. You need the proper evidence to lock a man up. You dont just lock him up because of the color of his skin or that you are just mad with him. This shows an abuse of power and authority. This is why no one wants to help the police or even listen to them. What an injustice. Would this had happened if he was a whiteman.

Dan Fullerton

As a man who is more than 70 years old, I am a contemporary of Mr. Peltier. He has more than paid the price and now deserves rehabilitation and release. Please grant him executive clemency immediately.

I've been following this case for over three decades, and it is an absolute travesty that Peltier was ever sent to prison in the first place. Peltier doesn't deserve clemency; he deserves a pardon, and the corrupt agents and prosecutors who lied under oath years ago should be jailed!!!

Christopher Snow

I am a youth minister who spent 6 years involved in Native American ministry on reservations and cities in NE and SD, including work for peace and justice on Pine Ridge. I am highly concerned both for the evidence of injustices in Leonard's original trial, and of the immediate health complications and lack of care he is experiencing in prison. For these reasons, and his decades of work for peace and justice from within prison, I believe he deserves clemency and that this is, indeed likely his last chance. Thank you for considering my thoughts, and my prayers are with you and your family as you finish your term.

Heidi Lucken

Free Peltier Now!!!

I agree fully that Mr. Leonard Peltier has been imprisoned for 41 years contrary to natural justice. His case was flawed and I believe that the appeals process was also. President Obama should as a last act of his presidency give clemency to this man who should not be behind bars. Native Americans have suffered from racism, theft, murder and so much more from the United States - clemency would be a small gesture of trying to make amends for this history.

Joseph Cubow

Heather J Macauley

Kees Quaadgras

No doubt this man earns at least a new trial, where his most likely innocence can be proven.

Geoffrey Marsh

This does seem a series of particularly dirty tricks by the powers that prosecute. The result: nearly 15,000 days in jail without compelling evidence of guilt. Give this man his freedom. He has paid more than enough.

Mieke Du Laing

This is again a proof of racial justice if President Obama (still president) gives pardon to a white army man(now woman) for exposing information they want to keep under the carpet BUT IS NOT WILLING TO GIVE PARDON FOR AN NATIVE AMERICAN THAT FOUGHT FOR THE FREEDOM AND BASIC RIGHTS OF HIS PEOPLE. WELL JOHN TRUDELL WILL TURN IN HIS GRAVE FOR SURE!! RACIST SOCIETY WITH LAWS CORRESPONDING TO YOUR SKIN COULOUR AND ORIGINE. THEY ALL FORGOT THAT THE NATIVE AMERICANS WHERE THE FIRST NATION, TRUE HABITANTS OF THAT COUNTRY NOT THE INVADERS FROM EVERYWHERE. Well Obama has still a little time to right the wrongdoing. Mieke

Dan Stein

There is no conclusive evidence that Mr. Peltier committed acts of murder. Ballistics studies were withheld from the trial - which is nothing short of pinning the blame on an innocent man and allowing scapegoating to overrule justice!

Gudrun Friedmann

I am signing this petition because the US is guilty of serious human rights violations. Because this fictitious judgment, which led to the arrest of Leonard Peltier, must be revised. Because he can not continue to be a prisoner of conscience, he needs appropriate medical treatment ..... and much more. I miss the words, what happens and happened ... Free Leonard Peltier !!!!

Lawrence Chilton

The only crime here is the incarceration.

This appears to be a sad and disgraceful case where the authorities invented evidence and generally abused their power. Justice could and should be done, even at this late hour.

This is horrible - no clemency! If Obama wouldn't pardon him, he's doomed.

Anna Palmer

He is innocent and was convicted under false pretenses! Peltier is receiving unfair treatment in prison, serving 40 years based on a sentence of proven coerced testimony. His original prosecutor(James Reynolds) has called out for his clemency after receiving more accurate evidence. He has managed to continue philanthropic programs even behind bars. Please let this innocent political prisoner go home so he can receive proper medical care and have a quality end to his tortured life.

Gerald Perdue

President Obama, please pardon Leonard Peltier. It's his last chance to live the last few years of his life in the free world. If you don't he will die in prison. His only crime was defending his people. He didn't shoot anyone. He was just there. I applaud your release of Lopez Rivera and Chelsea Manning. Please show the same empathy and compassion for an aging warrior.

George Scherba

Pardon--Time served!!!

Robert Dickerson

Please pardon him. Please grant him mercy now!!!

martyn rule

It is absurd that the fear of the US president to recognise the injustice against Leonard Peltier and his identity as an Native American prevents the release of this innocent man.The fear is the fear of having to be accountable for the genocide against him and his people. The US president should and must understand it is never too late to live and love the truth. He is truly the last of the mohicans who cannot harm you. We implore you to release him as an act of faith and fearlessness. Thank you for ending this hypnosis that has released an innocent man from jail.

I don't believe that Leonard Peltier had a fair trial or that justice has been served.
