I, Aoife J., fifth grader, believe Peirce Elementary should ban frog dissection from science classes. Here is my reasoning.
Every year, frogs are torn away from their homos, shipped across long distances, just to be delivered to a slaughterhouse and killed. Then they are sold to schools to perform a subject in class that makes most children uncomfortable.
Unfortunately, frogs are the most commonly dissected animals worldwide. Other species are dissected as well, such as mice, rats, fetal pigs, fish, and even cats and dogs. Frogs have also been one of the first animals to succumb to environmental pollution.
All species of frogs are disappearing at an alarming rate due to not scientifically understood environmental impacts. Some frog species have been wiped out due to this and other reasons.
Due to the drastic drop in frogs, waterborne insect populations have skyrocketed, resulting in increased crop destruction and the spread of such diseases as malaria!
Please sign below if you agree with my protest.
There simply is no need to kill and mutilate any living thing to show school children what they can learn from diagrams. Respect for all living things and nature is needed so much more. Saying no to frog dissection is sending all the right signals to teach empathy and respect for our earth. Heaven knows we need that! Thank you!
