Obviously the problem is not that the APP fellows are making too much, they aren’t. The problem is that the resident salary is far too low for the work that they do.

Residents are crucial members of the hospital community and generate tremendous amounts of revenue for UW Medicine. Our APP colleagues should continue to be compensated well for the work they do and so should we. Residents deserve equal treatment and equitable pay.

Residents should be compensated in such a way that allows them to live in the Seattle area, within half an hour of the hospital, comfortably. Honestly, I think that that starts at 110-120k a year. How can you expect them to care for our most vulnerable patients when one financial hiccup could send them into ruin? Working as an APP fellow I have watched them spend their blood, sweat and tears to keep this hospital afloat. They deserve better from hospital leadership.

As a current APP fellow I agree that the medical residents absolutely deserve a higher salary given the outstanding work they do, the significant responsibilities they bear, the burden of debt from education, and the rapidly increasing cost of living in Seattle. In my current rotation on the inpatient teams I do identical work to the interns except that they also take responsibility for precepting medical students. The burnout residents experience is directly related to their insufficient pay and grueling hours. Residents, APPs, patients, and families would all benefit from improved pay for residents.

Y’all should ashamed of yourselves for the way you treat your resident doctors. It’s a miracle any of them stay around when there is a world on careers that treat their finest and brightest like they deserve.

We value our APP colleagues, and they value us. We wish we were viewed with the same respect and value by the institution that we hold for each other

I am a APP Fellow at SCH. Though I understand that we are hired to work at SCH through different avenues, I feel strongly that the work the residents do at SCH and the outpatient clinics deserve to be fairly compensated and be a livable wage for living in Seattle. The residents (especially the senior residents) I have worked with have been an invaluable support to to my learning and growth as a new Advanced Practice Provider. They show so much dedication, expertise, and care while caring for SCH patients and are an extremely important cog in the SCH machine. They serve as a vital piece of providing high quality care to all of our patients. They work tremendously hard and have really chaotic schedules,so should be fairly compensated for their time and expertise. Extremely long shifts and chaotic schedules, coupled with the patient loads, can lead to burnout in residents and decreased quality of care provided to the patients. They should be provided with adequate rest to ensure their longevity in Healthcare and provide the best patient outcomes.

I greatly appreciate the hard work of my APP colleagues, and I feel like the efforts of medical house staff should be equally and fairly compensated. I am one of many residents who have had to find 2nd, 3rd, and even 4th jobs on top of my 80-hour work week in order to afford basic necessities. I won’t be able to afford my apartment next year because the raise doesn’t cover the increase of rent. Residents deserve to be fairly compensated for the incredible value we provide to SCH and UW.

First year Peds resident. Our current salary provided no safety net. Had unexpected family emergency and now working as babysitter, driving Uber eats and instacart on lighter rotations while working as an intern to make up for the financial burden
