During the 1800s Czarist Russia began a cold blooded military campaign to conquer the Caucasus. The methods used to accomplish this goal were extremely inhuman. No Caucasian, whether they be women, child or elderly, were spared Russia’s cruelty. As a result of this invasion Russia inevitably claimed the North Caucasus as its own. Today, The Federation of Russia claims that the indigenous people of the North Caucasus are loved citizens of Russia. However, to this day Russia denies the genocide it has perpetrated and continues to glorify the army leaders who committed it. All across the Caucasus Region, Russia has erected monuments on behalf of the worst offenders of genocide. Russia preaches ethnic equality amongst its people yet constructs symbols that represent racism and conflict within its own nation. If the peoples of the North Caucasus are to be regarded as a full part of the Russian Federation, while still maintaining their ethnic identities within their own republics, why would these reminders of Russian Imperialism be built across these lands? The Federation of Russia has no just reason to erect or amass these monuments to celebrate the genocide of the Caucasian peoples. If the government of the Russian Federation sincerely looks to ease ethnic and political tensions across the Caucasus, the least that can be done is to remove these monuments which are reminders of past conflict. This is an issue of human decency. HELP TAKE DOWN THESE MONUMENTS BY SIGNING THIS PETITION
