We, the citizens of Newfoundland Labrador, petition the Government of Newfoundland Labrador, specifically, the Department of Justice and Department of Health and Community Services, to implement a Protection of Children Abusing Drugs Act, PCHAD, as implemented in the province of Alberta. With the legal age of consent being 16, this creates health and safety issues for our youth as it relates to determining appropriate in- patient services for treatment for children between the ages of 16-18. This act would address the need for parental and or legal guardian input in determining appropriate patient care, while the patient is suffering from addiction or mental health issues, while still taking into consideration the input of the patient.
I started this because I watched a family member spiral while the system told us our hands were tied. Hearing your stories confirms that parents across this province are being shut out when their children need them the most. We are working to get these signatures in front of the officials who keep ignoring this gap in our care.

Seeing this kind of momentum brings me back to the nights I spent worrying about my own child and wishing there was a system in place to help us. It means the world to see so many people acknowledging that we need better protections for our struggling youth.

Fix this legislation. Parents arent the enemy when it comes to addiction recovery, we are the only ones who actually care if they live or die.

Alberta got this right. Parents need to be able to step in when a kid is clearly destroying their life. Stop letting 16 year olds make fatal choices.

My son is struggling and we have zero say in his care. It is heartbreaking to watch him spiral while the system shuts us out. We need this law now.

About time! Why is our government waiting for a tragedy to happen? Do something before more families lose their kids to this.
