Whereas, according to the Harvard Medical School Student Handbook, "Harvard Medical School and its affiliated hospitals are firmly committed to fostering a culture of mutual respect and trust." Whereas, there has been limited discussion with the Class of 2016 regarding the decision to randomize Principal Clinical Experience (PCE) hospital assignments. Whereas, a recent survey indicated that 85% of the Class of 2016 prefers the PCE lottery to randomization. Whereas, the PCE lottery is currently a successful PCE assignment method. By using the lottery, hospital preferences are optimized based on preferred education style, living situation, and hospital-specific clerkship features. In past years: 1) 85-90% of students were assigned to their first choice and 2) no student has been assigned to their third choice. Whereas, PCE randomization will result in more medical students not being assigned to their first choice than in the history of the PCE program, now, therefore, be it resolved: That the Class of 2016 request that Harvard Medical School leadership reinstate the PCE lottery.
