Truly inspirational, it's hard to believe such a young man could be such a hero. It would be a fitting tribute for Patrick along with other Irishmen that fought in Vietnam.

In brotherhood, with his fellow Marine and Mayo descendant PFC Harold " Tidley" Hannon, KIA, Tarawa 1943.

As a transplanted Tuam (Ireland) native living in Texas I think this is a fantastic idea. True courage should be honoured for posterity and this is a fitting tribute to a brave Irishman who gave the ultimate sacrifice to his adopted nation.

Like all wars it is sad to lose the young and talented especially such a brutal war, all Americans have benefited from these courageous men and all we can and should do is to honor them.

to paraphrase John Wayne...."Courage, its about being afraid, but still saddling up...". A very brave man. Not too many people in life get the chance to jump on a live grenade, even fewer take it.

A gallant young man taken too soon, naming the new vessel after him would be a fitting tribute him and his comrades from the US and Ireland

I have just read about Bob Gallagher, it is a tragic story but the idea of the petition to name a naval ship after him is lovely!

It would be a good idea to show that heroes of the Vietnam war are honoured and remembered in this way.

We, the undersigned, respectfully request that the Secretary of the Navy name DDG117, or a subsequent DDG class ship scheduled to be procured in 2017, to be named after Corporal Patrick "Bob" Gallagher, USMC, Navy Cross, of Ballyhaunis, Co. Mayo, Ireland (KIA ~ Da Nang 1967)
