I am from Ballyhaunis myself, to be from the same town as a hero is a genuine honour and blessing, I feel privileged. I hope he gets the recognition that is deserved.

Being Irish myself and naturalized an American citizen, nothing would make me prouder then to see such courage from a fellow Irishman be recognized in this way. Thank you to all Marines and other service members who serve our wonderful country. Semper fi and God bless Ireland and the USA.

On this day , July 18th, 1966 Patrick Gallagher jumped on a grenade while serving with the Marine Corp in Vietnam. He was subsequently awarded the Navy Cross for his brave action.
