Pass the Coroner's bill through Committee stage
The Elephant Collective ask the Minister to urgently pass the Coroner's bill through Committee stage so that every maternal death in Ireland will have an automatic inquest.
Ireland needs this because between 2011-2013, there were seven direct maternal deaths. However only three of these had inquests (Savita Halappanavar, Nora Hyland and Sally Rowlette)
The results of those three inquests brought into the public domain urgent information on the specific lapses in our maternity services that need to be dealt with openly and transparently
It is extremely important for families that they know what has happened to their loved one; This is acutely apparent in the case of Antoinette Pepper who died from septicaemia in 1988, her family is still begging for an inquest.
It was made obvious from Bimbo Onanuga's inquest that it is not sufficient for a coroner to have an autopsy report filed and to judge from that whether or not an inquest is needed; the Dublin Coroner's Office ruled on that basis that there was no need for an inquest and it was only when a group of international experts pointed out the flaws and gaps in the autopsy report that the inquest was eventually granted
This is a piece of legislation which will bring relief and some degree of closure for the families and more widely will help the entire community hold the HSE to account to ensure that changes are made on heel of the findings of coroners and coroners' juries
We need your support in this regard, please sign this petition to show the Minister how important this matter is to every person in Ireland.
