My daughter is starting her 8th grade basketball district tournament this week. I am her coach. It has been a roller coaster with COVID... “will they even get a season?”, “no fans are allowed”, “they might not get a tournament.” I have expressed my disgust and frustration and on more than one occasion have been met with, “well, it’s JUST 8th grade ball.” Really? It’s just 8th grade ball? This is what I have to say to that.... - Tell the 13 year old girl who spent all summer practicing her shot that it’s JUST 8th grade ball... -Tell the parents who spent $$$ on basketball camps that it’s JUST 8th grade ball... -Tell the single mom who worked extra shifts to get her child basketball shoes that it’s JUST 8th grade ball (and now she can’t come watch.) -Tell the great-grandparents who don’t know how many more games they’ll get to watch that it’s JUST 8th grade ball... -Tell the coach who has spent hours creating practice plans that it’s JUST 8th grade ball... -Tell the mom who wakes up at 5 am to take her player to a basketball skills group that it’s JUST 8th grade ball.... -Tell the player who wakes up at 5 am to go to the skills group that it’s JUST 8th grade ball.... -Tell the siblings who get neglected sometimes, and often do chores and make dinner on their own because mom and older sister are at practice, that it’s JUST 8th grade ball.... -Tell the dad who worked super hard all day to ensure his child can pay the sports fee that it’s JUST 8th grade ball.... -Tell the grandpa who spends Saturday’s teaching his grandkid new moves that it’s JUST 8th grade ball and he is not allowed in.... -Tell the team who works their butt off EVERY single day that it’s JUST 8th grade ball... It’s NOT just 8th grade ball. It IS 8th grade ball. Yes, I understand all of these efforts build character and will pay off for years to come outside the court, but these kids deserve to play. They deserve to have a loud gym with peers, parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts,

All activities matter! Swim, drama, orchestra, choirs....let it be fair for all parents, not just the athletic program.

Let the kids play. Give them some normalcy in this crazy world. Numbers show kids aren’t getting it in large numbers and when they do the majority of cases are mild. Let them play, don’t take away something they need not just physical but mentally and emotionally.

I want to be able watch my children play. I am willing to wear and mask during the game or tournament and I am willing help clean.

Just as we are able to go shopping with hundreds of other people crammed in a small space. We should be able to at least have 25 to 50 percent capacity. At the very least have both parents able to go to each game!

The kids need their lives back! They need to feel their parents support in person.
