Unsustainable palm oil production is killing hundreds of orang-utans and other endangered species. Vast areas of pristine rainforest is slashed and burned each year in order to make way for oil palm plantations. Many orang-utans are killed in the process, so that this one vegetable oil can be used in many of our everyday foods and products. This large-scale deforestation is pushing orang-utans to extinction, along with many other native species of Borneo and Sumatra. The equivalent of 300 soccer fields of rainforest is destroyed EACH HOUR for palm oil production. That’s five football fields each minute. This costs the lives of 50 orang-utans each week and the suffering of many more. 80% of their habitat has already been destroyed, soon there will be nowhere for the orang-utan’s to live.Palm oil is an extremely popular vegetable oil amongst manufacturers because it is cheaper and more efficient than other alternatives. Because palm oil isn't labelled in many countries, consumers are blinded to the fact that many of the products they are buying contribute to this unprecedented disaster. We use hundreds of products daily and we aren’t even aware if they contain damaging substances or not. Statistics show that 40% of the products we buy contain palm oil. To help save the Indonesian rainforest and the orang-utans that live there, we must choose to change our consumer habits to not be part of the destruction. If we are able to do so, we can make a significant impact on the industries behind the destruction and make them change. With the mandatory labelling of palm oil we can start this change.
