Bark dust spreading has been a yearly ritual for the landscape management crew at Pacific University for years, in an effort to "freshen" up the campus prior to a heavy traffic period by visitors leading up to commencement. Bark dust spreading is not a harmless operation. Bark dust has been proven to contain harmful particulates, including the metallic sort, that are put into the air and made available for students/faculty/visitors alike to inhale. Our proposal for Pacific is as follows: simply change the dates of bark dust spreading to the week of spring break, when students are not on campus. Although doing away with the practice all together would be ideal, we feel that this would be a strong step in the right direction.
