The Ozaukee County Interurban Trail is a treasured asset for those of us who value staying active year-round. In these days of COVID, fresh air and regular activity is absolutely critical to our physical & mental well-being. OzCo’s rural citizens rely on the Trail year round for walking, jogging, and dog-walking.

Concerning the rural stretch of Trail starting at Port Washington’s northern boundary and extending north to the City of Belgium, OzCo County Parks & Recreation Department is responsible for oversight & maintenance of the trail. (Note, the City of Port maintains their in-city section of the Trail separately.)

Parks & Rec’s budget for the 2020-21 Winter months did NOT include funds for snow removal on the Port-to-Belgium section of Trail, and it remained unused and impassable from December through mid-March. (There was also no visual indication the Trail was being used by skiers during that time.)

Efforts by this Petition’s organizer to request Parks & Rec to remove snow and make the Trail passable this winter were unsuccessful primarily due to OzCo Park & Rec’s budget limitations for this seaso.

By signing this Petition, you join in a demand that Ozaukee County Parks & Rec should take any and all actions necessary to structure their fiscal Budget to include allocated funds adequate to remove, or have removed, and keep clear all significant snow accumulation on the Port-to-Belgium Trail in the 2021-22 winter months, and also in winter months in years beyond 2022.

Updates

March 10, 2021

Ozaukee County Parks and Recreation is finally feeling the heat because this momentum proves they cannot ignore us any longer. Their pathetic excuses about budget limitations are crumbling under the weight of our collective demand for a clear trail.

I run through the winter. I would rather run on the bike path where I am safe from traffic. If the path is paved I would be able to do that. I would be very thankful for that. So would my family. They worry about my safety when I run on the side of the road in the winter.

This is an important recreational trail. We have missed it for dog walking and bird watching. Please consider plowing.

Over and over we hear how important exercise and especially outdoor exercise is to our physical and mental health. Please make the clearing of this trail for winter use a budgetary priority.

I support the snow removal to allow for walkers, bikers, and others to use this community resource during the winter.

Yes, yes, YES! This Trail is SO needed in the winter months by all of us living between Port and Belgium and in the surrounding areas. Walking on roadways is highly risky due to distracted and (too often) speeding drivers. Further, it seems like a relatively small budgetary expense, and completely justified considering how many rural residents this will benefit.

I think this asset is a wonderful opportunity for residents to get outside and breathe fresh air and be healthier people. It prevents some long term health problems to be active and breathe fresh air. Thanks.

It’s an exercise corridor for hibernation-flouting humans.

That trail is a treasure and asset to the community
