Styrofoam is a non-biodegradable and non-recyclable material that contains harmful chemicals that leak into our food, beverages, and environment. When you use a styrofoam product it will exist for the next 500 years before breaking down into small particles with unknown effects. Styrofoam accounts for 40% of our landfill space in the US and in 2006, the United Nations Environment Program estimated every square mile there was 46,000 pieces of floating styrofoam in the ocean, and showed 162 marine species to have eaten styrofoam and other plastics within that radius. We are petitioning to remove the use of styrofoam products in our schools here in OUSD. By signing this petition you are helping to remove hundreds of thousands of styrofoam waste from entering our environment just over the course of the next few years. As students we are against styrofoam in our schools and hope you will help us promote and healthy and clean future.
