Mohammed Al-Rabea Omar

I write to ask for the release of Mohammed Al-Rabea Omar who is currently being detained at Dungavel Immigration Removal Centre in Scotland. Mohammed fled from Sudan in January 2006. As a spokesperson and secretary for an opposition group, he began to receive threats, was interrogated and repeatedly tortured. He still suffers from  this inhuman and degrading treatment.

Mohammed travelled to the UK and arrived in Belfast in November 2009 seeking refuge. Mohammed is a graduate from the University of Khartoum and was teaching in a secondary school in Sudan before he fled. He wishes to resume his scholarly life in Northern Ireland. He has complied fully with restrictions placed on him by the UK Border Agency and with the PSNI.

In Belfast he has done his best to establish relationships within the community and is an active supporter of the Belfast Friendship Club, a Race Relations initiative. Accordingly, I ask that Mohammed is released from Dungavel and returned to Belfast so he can obtain the medical assistance he requires and resume his life within the community.

This is just wrong. Mohammed has done nothing but try to rebuild his life in Belfast. He needs help not a prison cell.

Known him through the friendship club and he is a genuinely good guy. This whole situation is a disgrace.

The man is educated and just wants to live in peace. Sending him to dungavel is just kicking him when he is down.

FREE MOHAMMED! He is a valued member of our community and should be treated with some basic human decency.
