I support students, parents, my fellow professionals, and administration in creating a budget that is in the best interest of all our children. I wish that my district would listen carefully to the challenges that teachers in PUBLIC school face. It is a very different experience from that of any charter school professional. I have signed in support of 1-6 but honestly I cannot support #7 and neither should Salem. I have lost too many great professionals and colleagues to other districts. Hopefully Salem does what is right for Salem.

This country is in big trouble when we make budget cuts on education. Teachers are the foundation for our future citizens of this nation. Cutting the budget on education should be the last resort!

Where are our priorities if we aren't investing in the future of our children? Over the past year my wife has received multiple unsolicited handwritten notes of thanks from the children she teaches and their parents for her excellent tutelage and now she stands to lose her job.
With every budget cut, brilliant teachers like her are chipped away at. She and others are repeatedly forced to consider leaving the field of education altogether. Losing these people is something our communities cannot afford. Every child NEEDS more attention, more teachers like her inspiring them and giving them the attention they need to see that they are smart and good hearted, and that what they're learning isn't just so they can get a job some day, but so they can be a creative, resourceful, free-thinking member of society.

As a parent of an autistic child that is going on to the 5th grade, I agree with everything that was sent out in the email. I am very dissapointed with the decision of the budget cut.

WHES desperately needs more money in their budget NOT LESS!! We need more teachers NOT LESS! WHES has more students than any school in Salem. To cut their budget the same as other schools with less kids is outrageous! OUR KIDS DESERVE MORE!

For the most part, these are all very positive comments. I would just remind all parents of children in the SPS that we will advocate most effectively by standing together, rather than arguing that this or that school has more resources. If one school, for example, has managed to advocate for smaller class sizes, the argument should not be, "let's stick more kids in there," but, "this works well. How do we get this level of excellence in every school?"
I deeply hope that we will be of one voice in this effort.

Serious consideration should also be given to reducing bus transportation costs across the city. If equal and excellent programming would be offered at all elementary schools there would really be no need for school choice and thus less of a need to bus students to schools all around Salem. The current elementary school model , with different schools offering different programming is both illogical and unfair. Every student in Salem should have equal access to equal programming/curriculum. This currently is not happening and if Salem is to truly become a model elementary system the current model must be abandoned and replaced with one best model that reflects best practices!
