The city finally backed down and the discriminatory rental licensing proposal is effectively dead. I am completely drained after this fight but the outcome is exactly what we needed. Stay alert because we proved that organized pushback works when they try to target our community again.

We the undersigned reject the basic premise of the proposed licensing of residential rental units in the City of Oshawa. The City of Oshawa has chosen to only apply this law to the streets surrounding the University of Ontario Institute of Technology and nowhere else in the city. The law limits the number of bedrooms in a rental house to 4 and does not allow students to use a basement as a bedroom even if the basement is up to code. The law will effectively; raise rents for students, forbid students from occupying basement bedrooms, and drastically increase costs to landlords who will pass on these costs to students. The fact that a family can own a house and be treated one way while a student renter is treated another is a situation that is not tolerable and discriminatory under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. The very fact that this law is only being applied on streets in Oshawa where students reside is prejudicial and is aimed at zoning students out of the community in which they reside. After being granted the luxury of a university that will employ thousands of residents, this is the City\'s response to a student community that spends tens of millions in the city. This law if unopposed will set a precedent throughout Ontario and will be coming soon to a University town near you. Support the University of Ontario Institute of Technology! Support student rights! Support the future of Oshawa! Support a future that is inclusive! OSHAWA PREPARE TO BE AMAZED!

We hit five hundred signatures today even though the city keeps ignoring the reality of the situation on the ground. It is exhausting to keep fighting for basic fairness but seeing this many people recognize the discrimination here keeps me going.

The climb toward five hundred signatures has been grueling and I am truly exhausted by the resistance we face. If you value fairness for our students then please send this link to someone who has not yet seen it. We keep pushing because the alternative is simply giving up.

Reaching this level of visibility proves the city cannot simply ignore these discriminatory housing policies anymore. It has been an exhausting road, but seeing this momentum grow gives me the resolve to keep pushing forward.

The city needs to stop acting like students are the problem. We want affordable rent and this just kills it for everyone.

Students are residents too. They pay taxes and buy local. This policy is completely backwards and needs to be scrapped immediately.

This is total discrimination. My kid is a student and he deserves a place to live that is actually affordable. Stop targeting them just because they go to school here.

Ridiculous how the city treats UOIT students like second class citizens. They bring so much money into Oshawa and this is how they get thanked??

Basement apartments are safe if they meet code. Limiting bedrooms is just a way to make everyone broke. Get real.
