To Mississippi Power Company:

We, the undersigned, urge the MS Power Company (MSPC) to stop using herbicides in vegetation management in Ocean Springs. We understand that MSPC is required to manage their easements to protect power lines. We also know that vegetation can be managed successfully without using herbicides.

In the Fall of 2022, contractors for MSPC used herbicides throughout the older neighborhoods of Ocean Springs and killed hundreds of native plants, pollinator plants, and other beneficial plants. These plants were mostly shrubs like azaleas, buckeyes, and lantana that never reach a height that would interfere with power transmission. The widespread use of herbicides also threatened our waterways and harmed birds, bees, and other wildlife.

We are requesting that MSPC provide documentation to the City of Ocean Springs that they will not use herbicides in vegetation management in Ocean Springs.

Sincerely,

The scale of this response is compelling and I am using it to push for a formal meeting with Mississippi Power management. I am currently drafting a letter that outlines our specific demands for alternative vegetation control methods.

Dear MS power, please do not use herbicides! And, also, this would be the worst possible time of the year to do it. Hummingbirds and Monarch butterflies are migrating through. They depend on insects and flowering plants. Citizens are doing every thing in their power to help them. PLEASE join with us!

The last time MS Power sprayed they sprayed a mulberry tree that was on our property that was part of the community fruit tree project. The tree was at least 15’ from power lines and clearly marked.

Last year, my little three year old granddaughter had a horrible reaction to the chemicals that were used. Please stop

The last spraying was an unmitigated debacle. People were screaming and Miss Power was deaf.

It makes me sick when I see the men walking along, in a haz-mat-type of suit, spraying our roadsides!

Last year was a debacle, the people doing the spraying are indiscriminately spraying poison . Stop this now!!
