Cormorants have multiplied out if controll on the Pacific coast Specificlly in our Nourthwest rivers where they fow into the ocean. These birds exclusively eat the fish that are most prelivant. During the times when salmanoid and steelhead smolt are heading out to sea, they are schooled and extremely vulnerable. Cormorants have been known to eat thousands of the immature sport fish causing erreversible damage to the migrating runs. In 2007, it is reported that 9.2 million salmanoid smolt were eaten by cormorants off Sand Island at the Columbia river mouth. With all the other problems desemating the salmon and steelhead populations, we feel something must be done about this one. We petition to deminish the cormorant population by the best and most humane means avalible, to be determined at a later date.
