On April 20th, 2009 Oracle announced a take-over of Sun Microsystems... The Department of Justice approved the transaction in North America within a few month and the Shareholders voted in favour... but the European Commission (EC) decided to launched a lengthy investigation fearing anti-competitive behavious related to a small software called MySQL (Acquired by Sun in 2008)... this investigation lead to a hearing in Dec09 in Europe during which Oracle & Sun argued successfully to the EC that there's no anti-competitive threat. Now with the acquisition set to be approved by the EC, the ex-founder of MySQL (Widenus), who launched a petition in the hope of blocking the acquisition and collected approx 30,000 votes, is lobbying Russia's anti-competitive body (FAS) and also China's to block the transaction... This Petition is directed against Widenus' efforts; We believe MySQL base software have been 'forked' well beyond any companies control; if Oracle decides to control and charge MySQL licensing fees; other freeware are readily available with similar functionality in the market to thwart any competition concerns.
