OPS Lack of Education
Omaha Public Schools started a new grading system beginning of the 2010-2011 school year. Rubrics simply put is a 5 levels of Standard-Based Education: 5=Advanced, 4=Proficient, 3=Basic, 2 thru 0=Below Basic. There are several major flaws when it comes to this style of grading.
Rubrics alleges :
*Homework is not essential to learning
*Students are involved with what grade they will
receive*There is no basis for grades other than a letter/percentage
*Effort, participation, attitude, and other behaviors are not part of grading
*If an assignment is given, there is no
repercussions for work not completed*A minimal 5-10 percent of a students entire grade is based on the points mentioned
According to a Magnet Middle School Principal in Omaha, Nebraska, a teacher is not required to educate beyond the bare minimum. A teacher shouldn't be burdened with helping students learn responsibility, discipline, or any type of social skills. With this new way of thinking, an unpromising future for every person is near.
School faculty, parents, and the entire community are accountable for an exceptional future for our children. It is fundamental that educators do everything possible to help guide our children to become independent and exemplary.
