Sutton Area Community, Inc. - Opposition to proposed plan of water main distribuition line from Water Shaft 33B
Dear Sutton Area Neighbors:
PETITION LETTER TO DEP, DOT, DDC This letter states the Sutton Area Community's opposition to the proposed plan to route the second water-main distribution line from Water shaft 33B on 59th and 1st Avenue south to 56th street and then west to connect to the 3rd Avenue Water Tunnel. This is a sudden and complete reversal of the Department of Environmental Protection(DEP), Department of Transportation(DOT), and Department of Design & Construction's(DDC) promised proposal to dig north on 1st and then west on 61st Street. It will result in construction and upheaval for many years in the heart of our residential community. It will compound the problems that already exist at the congested and dangerous intersection on 57th and 1st where an elderly woman was struck by a bus and killed only last week.
The impact of this disastrous plan will not only increase the risk of more traffic accidents, but it will also affect all communication services. Telephone and internet service provided by Verizon's underground cables along 56th St. will be interrupted for an indefinite period. Schools, restaurants, and merchants will be affected. Water interruption, potential rodents, night drilling, traffic, deliveries, noise, street closings and all our essential services will be curtailed for an indefinite period of time. We urge you to sign this petition, which will be delivered to the Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Transportation and the Department of Design & Construction to rethink their ill-conceived decision. With unanimous support, we hope to reverse their current plan. Thank you.
