Plan for recycling depot raises some objections

(Taken from Erin Advocate, July 21, 2015).

  • Proposal to open a metal and electronics recycling depot at the south end of the Erin village at former Brennan Haulage
  • Depot would be at busy intersection where County Road 124 enters the village as Main Street
  • Merchants and residents are concerned about the possible noise, traffic disruption, risk to pedestrians, after-hours drop-off of material, and that it could lead to more "less desirable" development
  • Current zoning is "Highway Commercial", this amendment to the zoning would change it to "Industrial"
  • Councillor Matt Sammut: "...having large trucks parked there previously 'was an embarrassment to our beautiful little town, and we don't want now to go back to something like that...".
  • Second meeting will be held August 11, 2015 at 7:30pm at the Town Office

What a terrible idea. The focus should be on making our town more beautiful and add to its charm. Not take away and have a scrap metal depot as the first thing you see when driving into town. Why not open that in the industrial area?

They can't be serious! Main street is busy enough with all the loud traffic and congestion from all the large trucks that should be re-routed to begin with. I've had too many people complain that they no longer like to walk our Main street because it's just too noisy, now if they see that when they first come into town they will drive right through. First Impressions everyone, it really does make a huge difference! We have alot of industrial land that can be used for this!! Keep it over there! Make that corner something that wow's all the visitors when they come up to that intersection. Something that makes people want to visit and support our businesses!!!

No! That would be a terrible introduction to the town and totally inappropriate for that corner.

That end of town is already out of character with the charm of our town let's not bring it down further! There is more appropriate industrial land at the other end of town.

This is a use compatible to the industrial area, certainly not Main St. in a commercial zone

The Town of Erin will not permit us to speak at next week's meeting. Few people showed up at the last meeting because nobody knew about this. They say that 29 business/residents received a letter. In canvassing for this petition so far I have only found 2 people that received this letter. They both thought that the business was where you donate a working dryer and someone purchases it. They thought this because the letter sent to them DOES NOT STATE WHAT KIND OF RECYCLE BUSINESS IT IS. Nowhere on the letter does it state it is a metal/electronics recycle business. So it is very unfair to say that nobody is complaining about this amendment when they didn't even know what the business is. I encourage you to attend the meeting and also email all councillors, mayor and county planner with your issues regarding this before next Tuesday!!!!Also please attend the meeting Aug. 11th at 7:30.
