I oppose the granting of a Type 48 Liquor License at 498 Broadway, San Francisco, CA 94133. Applicant: JASP, LLC, License #530775. I oppose this license on the following grounds: 1. Undue concentration of liquor licenses in the area. On the 400 block of Broadway, there are 9 On-Sale, and 1 Off-Sale licenses. 2. There are 2 pending 48 applications on the 400 block of Broadway (including 493 Broadway), this would bring the total of On-Sale licenses to 11, on this block alone. This block is saturated with bars and nightclubs with Type 48 licenses. 3. The owner (JASP LLC) has increased the bar space by combining a smaller bar space and an adjacent retail space. 4. The owner does not, to my knowledge, have experience operating a business which serves liquor. Clubs with inexperienced owners have been problematic for the Broadway Corridor. 5. The owner has not been fully transparent with the community regarding his plans. 6. The licensee is purchasing the license from another census tract (0611). 7. High crime area. 493 Broadway is located on the Broadway Corridor, which is a hot spot for crime in the Central District of San Francisco. A 48 license at 493 Broadway would negatively affect residents, and would likely result in more police calls, further straining SFPD resources. Crimemapping shows 186 crimes reported within 500 feet of 493 Broadway from 10/7/12 to 4/5/13. 8. The 400 block of Broadway is less than 1000 feet from an elementary school, playground, and one senior home. This area is also one of the most densely populated in the city, with more than 40K residents per square mile. Increasing the amount of 48 licenses will also increase nuisance for residential neighbors. 9. As presented, this venue does not serve a public necessity or convenience, as there are at least 23 other bars/clubs serving liquor within 1000 feet of 493 Broadway. At least 15 of these are Type 48 licenses. 10. I support community efforts to reduce crime and improve quality of life by promoting more diversity on the Broadway Corridor, which will better serve the local community. Adding Type 48 licenses to this bar/club-heavy area does not advance this goal.
