Today's paper said 46% people buy illegal cannabis. Therefore, if you think it will give Burnaby city more revenue, think again. Yet with more stores opening the crime rate connected with it will actually cost the city more.

1. The proposed location is too close the library within 200m. Teenagers visit the library very often to borrow books, for their study groups, school work and extracurricular activities, the legal cannabis store will have a negative and advertising effect for them. And they have no way to avoid it during their visit to the library. 2. The location is just below the residential buildings of king cross. The location not appropriate for children living there, and they have no other options to avoid it. 3. Solid evidence from research literature showed the crime rate increases in adjacent areas of legal cannabis store. It is the vulnerable populations of children, seniors and minorities who bears most the potential risk of crime increase, since our community have many vulnerable populations, and the location is at the center of our community, there are library, community center, parks, schools, preschools, daycares, churches around it, where the vulnerable populations visit those facilitate very often. The city should be responsible to protect the vulnerable populations, rather than increase their potential risks. 4. Having a legal cannabis store at the heart of our community won't make our community attractive.

The reason I bought this area is because it’s so family oriented. I don’t want a cannabis store to ruin that!

The Edmonds community is a vivid and growing community, and we have many young children, teenagers, and seniors living here. As I mentioned earlier the location of the cannabis store is just opposite to the Tommy Douglas Public Library(less than 150m), and only two blocks away from the Edmonds community center and parks. Thus, its negative impact on the local residents, especially to the children and seniors, cannot be ignored. Researches have shown the use of cannabis will increase the likelihood of impaired driving (Reference 1), and adjacent areas of cannabis store saw about 84 more property crimes per year than neighborhoods without a nearby cannabis store (Reference 2). As a mother, the last thing I want to see is to put my children in danger on our way to the community library, community center, and parks. I sincerely appreciate my children and other residents can feel secure and safe while we're enjoying daily life in our community, therefore I am opposed to the opening of a legal cannabis store at 7360 Kingsway, where is the center and heart of our Edmonds community. Besides, a lot of my friends are also concerned about opening a cannabis store in Old Orchard Shopping Centre. The proposed location of the Cannabis store is near many public facilities:3 elementary schools (Chaffey-Burke Elementary ,Marlborough Elementary and Maywood Elementary),Burnaby main library, 3 churches, densely inhabited buildings, playgrounds, parks and community centre.
