We, the concerned residents and community members of Jersey City Heights, are urging city officials to reject the proposal for bike lanes on Manhattan Ave and Franklin St.

While we support safer streets and alternative transportation, placing bike lanes on these specific streets creates more problems than it solves. Here’s why:

  • Heavy Traffic and Large Vehicles: Manhattan Ave and Franklin St are already the most congested areas in the Heights. 18-wheeler trucks often get stuck on Manhattan and Central Ave, creating major traffic jams. With bike lanes, cars will have no way to pass, leading to dangerous backups and the potential for accidents as vehicles are forced to reverse on narrow, congested streets.
  • Safety of Pedestrians and Children: Diverting traffic to Reservoir St, which runs directly next to the park and playground, puts children and pedestrians at serious risk. This street is also the only entrance to the reservoir, making it a high-traffic area where increased car flow could cause further safety concerns.
  • Emergency Access and Transportation Delays: In case of emergencies, fire trucks, ambulances, and even ride services like Uber could face significant delays due to traffic blockages. This not only puts lives at risk but also complicates access for residents who rely on transportation services or face emergencies in their homes.

We believe the proposed bike lanes on these streets would cause more harm than good, putting pedestrians, children, and everyday commuters in danger. We support finding a safer, more effective solution for bike lanes, but Manhattan Ave and Franklin St are not suitable locations.
