We, the concerned citizens of Montgomery County, voice grave concern about the proposed move of the Rivendell program to Prices Fork Elementary School. Rivendell students are placed in an alternative setting because they cannot function in the society of peer-aged high school students. We do not deny these students the right to an education and we support them having a safe, stable, supportive learning environment. It is unfortunate these students have already been moved once in recent years and are now being asked to move again and likely a few years after that. However, the notion of saving $50,000 by co-locating these students with elementary students (pre-K through 5th grade, 5 – 11 year olds) is alarming. The safety of our children is at risk. Co-locating any high school students with elementary students poses a safety threat to the elementary students. Co-locating a population of students with a record of violent behavior and disciplinary problems with our children is a tragedy waiting to happen. If the primary concern is cost savings, consider these costs: Prices Fork has no SRO (school resource officer) who will ensure the well being of all students at PFES. Prices Fork has one school nurse. How does she simultaneously treat the six year old with a bloody nose and the sixteen year old suffering the effects of drugs or alcohol? What will be the cost of litigation if an elementary student in harmed by an older student? Please take this unsafe proposal off the table for the well being of all students, both the Rivendell students and the children at Prices Fork Elementary School.
