No to an unconstitutional mandate! If a mask makes someone feel safer, even though it does not make them safer, then they can wear one. Don't force it on everyone

I oppose a mandated mask ordinance in Greene County as well as Springfield.

Firstly, COVID-19 and influenza viruses have a similar disease presentation. That is, they both cause respiratory disease, which presents as a wide range of illness from asymptomatic or mild through to severe disease and death. Secondly, both viruses are transmitted by contact, droplets and fomites. As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette (coughing into your elbow or into a tissue and immediately disposing of the tissue), are important actions all can take to prevent infection. The speed of transmission is an important point of difference between the two viruses. Influenza has a shorter median incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) and a shorter serial interval (the time between successive cases) than COVID-19 virus. The serial interval for COVID-19 virus is estimated to be 5-6 days, while for influenza virus, the serial interval is 3 days. This means that influenza can spread faster than COVID-19. Further, transmission in the first 3-5 days of illness, or potentially pre-symptomatic transmission –transmission of the virus before the appearance of symptoms – is a major driver of transmission for influenza. In contrast, while we are learning that there are people who can shed COVID-19 virus 24-48 hours prior to symptom onset, at present, this does not appear to be a major driver of transmission. The reproductive number – the number of secondary infections generated from one infected individual – is understood to be between 2 and 2.5 for COVID-19 virus, higher than for influenza. However, estimates for both COVID-19 and influenza viruses are very context and time-specific, making direct comparisons more difficult. Children are important drivers of influenza virus transmission in the community. Masks are already creating more harm than good with staff infection risks and breathing problems. Everyone should have the freedom to choose for themselves.

Besides infringing on our rights; forcing Springfieldians to wear masks at this point will not benefit anyone and may harm our economy, as many Springfieldians will choose to shop & do business outside of the Springfield area. It has been repeatedly shown that the COVID-19 death numbers are severely skewed because deaths form other causes are being counted as COVID deaths. All deceased testing positive for the virus are being counted as COVID deaths (even though they may have died of cancer, heart attack, car wreck, etc. and had little or no symptoms of the virus). The testing itself us unreliable. We often hear reports of false positives causing extended self-quarintines and loss of income. Hospitals have NOT been overflowing with those who are infected by the virus, as was originally predicted. Government leaders have trampled our freedom of religion during this pandemic, declaring that gathering together in worship is non-essential and punishable by law; while going to the local Wal-Mart to panic-shop, wiping out shelves & hording items is essential. The botomline is that COVID-19, while a potentially serious health risk to a small number of people in at risk populations, is a very survivable virus that has been completely blown out of proportion by the CDC, our government, and news organizations. In my opinion, this whole pandemic has been an experiment in how easily the American people will buy into the twisted truths and flat out lies laid before them and lay down their most basic rights "for the good of society". It's time for the experiment to end and for our lives to get back to normal. Springfieldians are intelligent enough for individuals to decide if they need to wear a mask based on their personal health situation. City Council needs to respect the intelligence and integrity of the citizens they serve and leave individuals with the right to choose whether or not to mask up.
