We the undersigned object to the proposed restructuring of the Estates and Facilities department. The cuts will lead to: • Reduced services for students and staff. • Job losses that disproportionately affect the lowest paid staff. • Pay increases for the department’s senior management, whilst some of the lowest paid workers face pay cuts. • Added layers of management and increased bureaucracy. • More private contractors and fewer staff directly employed by the Institute of Education. • Elimination of allowances, such as overtime payments, resulting in drastic cuts in living standards for low paid staff.
UNISON and UCU have put forward an alternative proposal that meets management’s objectives without sacking staff or cutting their pay. In the light of the Institute of Education’s commitment to both social justice and excellence, we call on management to enter into meaningful consultations with the trade unions to avoid cuts to the staff and services of this department.
