As a recreational fisherman, I fully support initiatives to combat the over exploitation of our natural sea resources. I fully support catch bag limits and strongly opposed to illegal fishing.
In the Gazette posted 3 February the Minister of Environmental Affairs wants to completely close off a fishing area and wants to do so with no proven scientific reasons. The fish we recreational (and commercial) fisherman target do not breed in this area and do not hang around the whole year.
I support a controlled area and not a completely closed off area. Allow fisherman to fish and monitor the bag / catch limits. Stop the trawling in the area and the trek netters that indiscriminately catch juvenile fish.
Spend the time and money on law- enforcement and impound illegal fishing and pouching boats. Create a communication channel with us fisherman to be able to report illegal fishing activities and then act on it.
I therefore urge fellow fisherman that catch commercial or recreationally to support this petition against the establishment of an area that completely bans fishing in the areas indicated in the Government Gazette of 3 February 2016.

This area has seasonal migration of snoek & geelbek which lasts a month,other species hottentot and jackopever is residential. What I don't understand is that boats from Hermanus has been issued with perlemoen licences to catch at Robben Island.
This seems to be part of a series of limitations on recreational fishing. First perlemoen, Then kreef from Melkbos to Yzerfontein. Now Robben fishing. What next. If it keep on like this we will have nothing left.
This petition is 100% valid and spot on. Trek netters take more fish on one day than all recreationals in months at Robben island. I've been stopped plenty of times, asked for permit, but not once asked to show fish size.
I strongly opose the close of robben island for fishing, with limited access to fishing waters in cape town Robben Island is one of the few spots accessable for recreational anglers launching form OPBC
Better policing will help save our fish stocks but a complete ban will just result in more people fishing illegal in the area. Rather reduce the limits that people are allowed to take.

I have been a member of OPBC most of my life and fishing recreationally in the area in question. I do not believe there should be an arbritrary exclusion, it will just push those who fish illegally further away but prevent those responsible fisherman from enjoying our coastline
