BFI's choice feels like a hard slap in the face, as well as farcical.

How dare you allow a male to take the place of a woman film maker?
Wake up and smell the fraud.

This is completely disrespectful to actual female film makers. Totally disgusting how you can pass over so many talented women to put a man who has only been in front of the camera to my knowledge. Sickening :(

Women spoke only 27% of the dialogue in the top 10 grossing films of 2016. And now you have invited a man to speak for us once again. Give women a voice.

I am personally offended. Please don't collude with even more male domination of the industry.

A really neat way to avoid the issues completely. You're more concerned with the profile it will give the BFI than promoting women in film.

This is an insult to women who have studied, worked and struggled to break into a male-dominated industry.

So many women to choose from. Yet you choose a man.

Munroe Bergdorf is a man, not a woman. He has presented - not produced, directed or written - one film. There are thousands of woman in the film industry more worthy of making a speech than this man. Stop ignoring women.

This MAN has made homophobic and misogynistic comments but the BFI think he represents women? Shameful.

Can nothing be left to women? Munroe Bergdorf does not and cannot speak for women.

Champion Member of the BFI shocked at this ridiculous and insulting invitation. Have a long hard honest think about what a WOMAN really is please.

Pretty unbelievable, but then the film industry is male dominated and happier employing other men . This was an opportunity to feature a high profile filmmaker, sadly it is now a missed one...

WTF BFI.
Read the comments.
Stop virtue signalling and choose from the list of amazing, talented, female filmmakers suggested below.
(Since surprisingly you don't know any)

Munroe Bergdorf will reply: "I Am A Woman".
So, British Film Institute, how about get yourselves concerned with the competition of transgender women with natal women?
Let's think about the natal women who lived before and will also will live after a transgender woman, like Munroe Bergdorf, has hogged the attention of the British Film Institute and its awards.
It's possible that natal women will always be a constant type of human being, which is (you know) the Human Female, while transgender beliefs won't forever endure.

Such an insult to real women! Seriously, you need the publicity that much?
