Deeply upset by this move. As a retired film maker I know that this will not be welcomed amongst women in the industry

I am absolutely appalled that an event specifically for women is being keynoted by a man performing femininity. Have you lost your fucking minds? Did you lay awake trying to figure out how best to insult and demean women?

Neither female nor behind the camera. Only claim to fame is being trans. The bar is so low for some but for others it may well be made of unobtainium.

what a fucking insult to prioritise this bloke and expect us all to pretend that we dont know that he is a bloke.
A porn loving dick loving male supremacist biology denying bloke.
A bloke who said that reproductive biology is irrelevant.
A blatently obvious bloke.
You fake liberals dont give a damn about women.
We know that you hate us.

Hundreds of brilliant, outstanding, creative women work in the British film industry and struggle for acceptance against discrimination and oppression. Because of their sex. And you choose a male to be the keynote speaker? A person who neither shares their struggles nor works in the industry?
Women are already largely excluded from the industry, from the funding, from awards and recognition and this is how you redress that imbalance? By excluding them some more?
Has the world gone mad?
Have you?

Yet again women are being sidelined at their own event, there are so many incredibly talented females out there to choose from. This is wrong on so many levels. Stop throwing women under the bus for the sake of looking progressive. This is not progressive it's regressive

This has got to be the most ridiculous act of redundant virtue-signalling ever.

This event is to consider the impact of women in film. When I do likewise, I reflect the expanse traveled from even relatively recently. It is crucial that it is is recognised and that young girls understand the paths open to them, highly important. That is not accomplished by granting a platform to a foul-mouthed poser, responsible for spreading bigoted, homophobic views, whose contribution to film extends to a biased documentary of their own life under pretense of focus on women. To proceed with this would be an insult.

This smacks of virtue signalling by the BFI who seem more interested in being 'current' than asking one of the many under-represented female film-makers to speak.

1) Interesting approach in the wake of #TimesUp #MeToo to choose a former men.
2) Note that trans rights militants have become so nasty and vindictive that most signatories are asking to be anonymised. I don't want to risk a backlash at work by responding publicly to every single example of erasure of women but it is going on a lot all of a sudden.

There are undoubtedly better qualified people for this. Engaging with women, who were born women, would be a good place to start. Better still, you could choose somebody who centres and appreciates women in all their diversity, and who doesn’t insult those of us who don’t conform to grotesque male ideas of femininity when it comes to the superficial matter of what women should look like.

In what way can a privileged man be representative of women? Especially one that's made so many racist and misogynistic remarks. Of all the amazing women involved in the film industry, are you really saying that he's the best you can do? Shame on you BFI!

Would the BFI ask a white man to be keynote speaker at a POC film event ? Thought not !

This decision by the BFI events team smacks of a superficial, ill-thought out, attention-grabbing, celebrity chasing mess. However, this is exactly the kind of take-over of women's issues and spaces which the equally superficial, band-wagon jumping cheerleaders of the left who have accepted as gospel a militant and illogical dogma - that transwomen (men) are actually, women - have shut both eyes to and denounced any queries about possible ramifications as bigotry. We really need a serious and grown up conversation about the current formulation of trans rights because as they are currently formulated they will tread all over women, as this fiasco only too well demonstrates. The muddled thinking and incoherence that this episode illustrates is actually widespread and only discussion rather than imposition will sort that out.

Platform Bergdorf as a trans representative if you must. But get a female to speak for women! Does the BFI really think a woman is just a male wearing makeup & hair extensions? If so, you have a very deep sexism problem and should not receive any public funding.
