This position statement has already had deleterious effects on the children of Washington DC. Children are now pressured to socially transition as young as 3 and 4 years old, and teachers, students and administrators are forced by law to assist them in their social transition. Who knows what long-term effects this will have on these children, whose whole world around them is now telling them through many different means that they are really the opposite of their natal gender? We know that children this young are, in every respect, in their formative years. We are inflicting psychological damage on these children in the name of tolerance. Other schoolchildren in DC, who had never before questioned their identity, are now doing so after being exposed to readings of I am Jazz, which schools are implementing to try to comply with the law. Your position statement, while well-intentioned, was off-base. Fight bullying with anti-bullying policies. Recommend special attention and care for gender dysphoric children. But don't publish a guideline recommending society help these young children to socially transition!

We need psychologists that will try to diagnose gender dysphoria and provide good therapy, instead of pushing the patient to accept the fact that he or she is transgender. We need to learn more about treatment approaches for gender dysphasia. What you are proposing is bad medicine. There is no body of literature, based in repeated credible studies with long-term follow-up, to support off-label use of irreversible, harmful drugs and disfiguring surgeries - all in the name of an ideological belief system. Leave kids alone, with the emotional/psychological support they need to get through puberty, and they will not want to permanently damage their bodies, minds, and future sexual function.

Your current postion on gender dsyphoria youth spreads the trans umbrella over vulnerable gay and lesbian youth. Telling a young child that they are wrong in " coloring outside the lines" of sterotypical gender role and that they may be in the wrong body is malpractice. This is gay erasure as most of the children will grow up to be healthy happy gay or lesbians once our brains finish developing around age 25. Your policies are destroying a whole generation of young lesbians. I certainly remember a time in my life that I wanted be a man to opt out of the patriarchal oppression of my femininity. Short hair, weight lifting ,and same sex attraction does not equate with being in the wrong body except to a homophobic subsection of society. Trans ideology is inherently homophobic, I see this within the LGBT community and see the pressure placed on young baby butch girls that they some how are wrong for being lesbians, bullied for not wanting to "choke on my lady dick". Your current policy is homophobic and favors the faith based claim that a magic knife, pills and words can change a persons sex, when DNA scientifically proves otherwise.

Protect the children, do not hastily pass out drugs and go with a diagnosis that is not objectively verifiable. These children need supports and at adulthood, when many change their mind, they can made decisions that will affect them all their lives, and will have sterilized them.

We arranged for our daughter to begin therapy with the stated desire that the therapist explore the roots of her sudden dysphoria. When I raised the issue of the drastic nature of a double-mastectomy (which both he and my daughter refer to as "top-surgery"), he said to my daughter , "If you changed your mind later, you could always get implants." This, to me, is NOT practicing sound medicine.
