There has been many efforts to open a hostel in Killarney but funding has always been the issue....There is little awareness of the current situation with a population of near 14,000 people i can not understand how a hostel has not been funded.

All organisations working in the homeless sector would recommend the housing first approach to tackle long term homelessness which was in the programme for the current government. I believe in Theory this is a really good idea, placing an individual in accommodation and working through their problems but the reality is in Kerry there is no tenancy sustainment nor any out-reach workers in this sector. If there was a person working with people to sustain there accommodation it would has a massive postive affect it would ensure clients are fully able to sustain the accommodation true support and advise on issues like budgeting without This a large number of people will be unsuccessful in their attempts to sustain their own accommodation, I also believe the current and past governments have neglected this sector an example of this would be the first housing assessment in Ireland was carried in 1929 and it was some 60 years before the next one was this is total unacceptable.
