The city council confirmed the allocation of local funds to establish the Sylmar Senior Center. We are moving into the site selection phase and will monitor the procurement process to ensure the facility meets the requirements outlined in our proposal.

Final supporters
The Senior Committee of the Sylmar Neighborhood Council needs your support for a Senior Center in Sylmar, to bring services to the nearly 16,000 seniors here. To start, our goal is 1,000 signatures.
Seniors living in Sylmar deserve services that help preserve their independence, self-sufficiency, physical and emotional health as well as positive social and community engagement.
Instead of travelling outside Sylmar for aid, a local center would give seniors access to information and assistance with problems, whether a need for home-delivered meals, home health care, legal aid, transportation, or dealing with issues such as elder abuse and scams.
A center would have a lunch program, exercise classes taught by teachers certified to teach seniors, and support groups dealing with medical issues such as diabetes or the social issues becoming more common in our time, such as caregiver support for Alzheimer’s or grandparents raising grandchildren.
At least $50 million in federal and state money already comes into Los Angeles city and county for senior services, so Sylmar is not asking for something for which there is no money available.
We hope all ages who live and or work in Sylmar will sign the petition, not just seniors, to help meet the needs of our older adults.

Reaching this threshold validates the necessity of a dedicated senior facility in our neighborhood. I am currently finalizing a formal briefing document to present to the City Council to initiate the site selection process. We will leverage this momentum during our upcoming scheduled meeting with local stakeholders.

I will be soon turning 70 myself and would like to see us make a first step to even a temporary facility. So long as it is well placed and broadly offering programs.
Agree fully with the petition statements requesting a senior center in Sylmar. It makes sense to address the needs of Sylmar seniors for residents of all ages eventually can make use of the services. Healthy seniors make healthy communities.
This is a great idea especially since a lot of my neighbors are retired. Let’s make this happen please! Let me know if you need volunteers.
Just went to new senior center in Santa Clarita. We need and deserve a center like that one.
As one of our aging community members we need to stay active and engaged we need a community center with great Senior programs such as the City of Burbank offers. I’m looking forward to our new center and hoping our local CD7 helps us to achieve our goal . Thank you Penelope for your hard work !
We have almost 100,000 people in Sylmar. I wonder if we can get 1% to sign this. Over 99% of Sylmar residents do not participate in local issues at all.
We get dumped with homeless but not taking care of our senior citizens! Do need a Senior Center in Sylmar!
